Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the prevention of vertical transmission of HBV.

  • Review approaches for avoiding the development of drug resistance during treatment of chronic hepatitis B, and for treating patients infected with lamivudine-resistant HBV.

  • Describe the results of recent studies of antiviral agents for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B, including adefovir dipivoxil, entecavir, telbivudine, and lamivudine as well as peginterferon and standard interferon.
