Kenneth E. Sherman, MD, PhD, explores the clinical need for novel therapies for chronic hepatitis C. He also reviews the hepatitis C virus life cycle, highlighting the lack of understanding of the mechanism of actions of current agents and the rationale behind specific targeting of the novel small agents in development. The potential for drug resistance based on the specific modes of action of antivirals will be discussed.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss prospective therapeutic targets inherent in the mechanism of hepatitis C virus (HCV) viral replication
- Explain the rationale for and potential utility of novel agents under development for the treatment of HCV
- Describe HCV antiviral resistance that may develop with certain novel therapeutics
