Goal
The overarching purpose of this training is to provide concentrated education and resources to promote the safe and effective prescribing of controlled substances when clinically appropriate for a legitimate medical purpose. The focus is to accelerate practice implementation and compliance by delivery of evidence-based foundational components of care in an engaging format customized for the busy schedule of a practicing provider.  The learning objectives will be used to strategically create an action plan and vision for the delivery of integrated, high-quality, collaborative education that is relevant and actionable across practice settings.

Target Audience:
All Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners including physicians, podiatrists, dentists, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and physician assistants/physician associates who are authorized to dispense controlled substances by the state in which they practice.

Learning Objectives:
After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Apply foundational practice elements for controlled substance prescribing for approved indications
  • Interpret screening and assessment tools for identifying patients at risk for substance use disorders
  • Identify tools and resources to foster optimization of practice impact, including weighing risks and benefits of controlled substance prescribing
  • Incorporate strategies to successfully initiate and monitor controlled substances
  • Construct evidence-based, individualized treatment plans to provide effective care for persons with substance use disorders

The AAFP has reviewed DEA Course: Controlled Substance Prescribing: Comprehensive Education To Improve Quality of Care -Live, and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Term of approval is from 06/24/2023 to 06/23/2024. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.
