Impact and Application of CDC Opioid Prescribing Guidelines

Clinical Thought

In 2016, the CDC released guidance for prescribing opioid therapy for pain management in the primary care setting to help alleviate opioid-related overdoses and deaths. Misapplication of guidelines resulted in significant harm for patients who needed therapy for chronic pain; with the release of updated guidance, it is important for the medical community to ensure they are used appropriately.
