Target Audience

All Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners including physicians, podiatrists, dentists, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, clinical nurse specialists and physician assistants/physician associates who are authorized to dispense controlled substances by the state in which they practice.

Program Learning Goal

The goal of this program is to increase the knowledge, competence, and performance of healthcare providers in safe and effective controlled substance prescribing, pain management, and recognition and treatment of substance use disorders.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review the epidemiology of stimulant and sedative use in the United States

  • Explain physiologic effects of stimulant use

  • Describe unique challenges with treatment of special populations in stimulant and sedative use disorders

  • Facilitate a standardized approach to assessing the needs of individuals with stimulant and sedative use disorders

  • Discuss screening, diagnosis, and treatment for stimulant and sedative use disorders

AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credits™ toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.
