In this video roundtable, learn from a healthcare professional and a PrEP user and advocate about PrEP persistence, including available data about rates of PrEP persistence overall and in key populations, barriers to retention in PrEP care, factors associated with long-term PrEP adherence in the setting of ongoing risk for HIV acquisition, and principles regarding PrEP monitoring, as well as reengagement strategies for individuals who have discontinued PrEP

Target Audience

This program is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physician associate/physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals who care for persons at risk of HIV acquisition.

Program Learning Goal

The goal of this program is to equip healthcare professionals caring for patients initiated on PrEP with practical strategies to overcome barriers to PrEP persistence and reengage with those who have discontinued PrEP

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify patients at risk of PrEP discontinuation through proactive monitoring strategies and awareness of populations at increased risk of discontinuation, such as women and younger patients

  • Apply supportive interventions to reduce the risk of inappropriate PrEP discontinuation, addressing health system, regimen-based, and patient factors

  • Implement practical strategies to reengage patients in PrEP care when they have an ongoing risk of HIV acquisition but have discontinued PrEP
