A Gateway to Care: Screening for HIV and Viral Hepatitis in the Emergency Room and Urgent Care

Clinical Thought

Despite the need to screen for HIV and viral hepatitis, for an important population, the only opportunity to do any screening is when they happen to interact with the healthcare system for a separate acute issue. Although the highest priority in the emergency department or urgent care is to get that acute need addressed, it's also a great opportunity to get patients connected to care to screen for conditions that could be a major problems in the future if they are left unaddressed.
