DEA Compliant 8-Hour Substance Use Disorders Resource Center

Effective June 27, 2023, in compliance with the MATE ACT the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will require all DEA certificate holders to take at least 8 hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders, as well as the safe pharmacologic management of dental pain, to apply for or renew their DEA certification. All practitioners who are registered with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), except for practitioners who are solely veterinarians. This includes MDs, DOs, DDSs, DMDs, APRNs, ODs, and others who hold DEA prescriber registrations.

Under the MATE Act, DEA-registered physicians, dentists, and practitioners must have a total of 8 hours of training on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This training can be obtained by courses such as the CCO DEA course.

No, you can choose from either the video or text modules to complete the course. There are nine program modules - for each module, there are two formats from which to choose – video or text. You will receive credit by completing one of the format options for each title. Completed modules will be indicated by a green check mark on the main course page and they may be completed in any order.

Noncompliance Penalties for HCPs


21 USC 843(d) states that any person who knowingly or intentionally furnishes false or fraudulent information in the application is subject to a term of imprisonment of not more than 4 years, and a fine under Title 18 of not more than $250,000, than $250,000 or both.

DEA will request proof of course completion when conducting routine inspections and audits.
