What are the Illinois Medical License CME Requirements?

Illinois Medical License CME Requirements*

Licensees are required to complete 150 hours of CME prior to renewing their medical licenses. A minimum of 60 CME hours must be obtained in formal CME programs. A maximum of 90 CME hours may be obtained in informal CME programs or activities. Each licensee is responsible for maintaining records of completion of continuing education and shall be prepared to produce the records when requested by the Department.

In addition, the below specific continuing education hours count toward the total 150 required hours.

Every prescriber who is licensed to prescribe controlled substances shall, during the pre-renewal period, complete one hour of continuing education on safe opioid prescribing practices. (Source: P.A. 103-531, eff. 1-1-25.)

For license or registration renewals occurring on or after January 1, 2023, a health care professional who provides health care services to adult populations 26 or older must complete at least a one-hour course in training on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias per renewal period.

This information is in accordance with the Illinois State Medical Board. Please note that CME requirements are subject to change. We continue to make updates as we become aware of them. However, healthcare professionals should confirm the most current requirements with their state Board of Medicine for accuracy.
