Washington requires 100 hours of CME for physicians every 2 years, with a 1-hour, one-time requirement in the area of controlled substances for authorized prescribers. In addition, physicians are required at least 2 hours of health equity training every 4 years.*

What are the Washington Medical License CME Requirements?


Washington Medical License CME Requirements*

Physicians must have a total of 100 hours of continuing education every 2 years.

Opioid prescribers have a one-time requirement of 1 hour in opioid prescribing. Prescribers of long-acting opioids or methadone have a one-time requirement of 4 hours on this topic.

Physicians are required at least 2 hours of health equity training every 4 years, including strategies to reduce implicit bias and assess the provider’s ability to apply health equity concepts into practice. These hours are included in the total required for renewal.

This information is in accordance with the Washington Medical Commission. Please note that CME requirements are subject to change. We continue to make updates as we become aware of them. However, healthcare professionals should confirm the most current requirements with their state Board of Medicine for accuracy.
