  • Guideline recommendations for diagnosis, nonpharmacologic (nutrition, physical activity, behavioral) and pharmacologic treatment, treatment monitoring
  • Overview of therapeutic targets to address the underlying pathophysiology of weight regulation/obesity
  • Comparison of the mechanisms of action and efficacy and safety profiles for approved agents for the treatment of obesity
  • Latest evidence for current and emerging agents for the management of obesity
  • Individualizing treatment by identifying opportunities and approaches aligned with shared decision-making in obesity management

Goal Statement
The goal of this program is to improve the knowledge, competence, and performance of learners in effort to optimize the diagnosis and treatment for patients with obesity. 

Target Audience
This program is intended for US primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician associates who care for patients with obesity.

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

  • Identify key factors that contribute to weight gain and challenge sustained weight loss
  • Develop strategies that aim to destigmatize the diagnosis and management of obesity in primary care
  • Apply shared decision-making techniques to engage patients for successful long-term obesity management
  • Compare the latest clinical evidence for current and emerging pharmacotherapy treatments for obesity
  • Design individualized treatment plans using evidence-based pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for the long-term management of patients with obesity
  • Evaluate practical approaches to enhance patient-centered obesity management in primary care

Successful completion of this CME activity, which included participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1.0 MOC point in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
