Program Overview
This program will provide healthcare professionals with valuable information for managing breakthrough seizures and seizure clusters in their patients with epilepsy. Experts will review the available options for rescue medication and how to incorporate them into a patient’s treatment plan. The importance of an individualized seizure action plan and strategies for communicating plan components with patients and caregivers also will be discussed. 

Goal Statement
The goal of this program is to improve the knowledge, competence, and comfort of healthcare professionals in developing seizure action plans including rescue medications to optimize treatment for patients with epilepsy who experience acute repetitive seizure episodes.

This program is intended for healthcare professionals caring for patients with epilepsy, including neurologists, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, physician associates/physician assistants, nurses, and pharmacists. 

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Justify the need for a seizure action plan based on disease- and patient-specific characteristics
  • Identify key elements of a seizure action plan
  • Differentiate characteristics of pharmacologic options for breakthrough seizures
  • Formulate strategies for counseling patients, family members, and caregivers on how and when to use rescue medications
