Mpox Reinfection

Carlos del Rio, MD, FIDSA:
In our clinic, we continue to see cases, but the vast majority are in either unvaccinated or partially (1 dose) vaccinated individuals.

The 2023 Chicago Cluster

Aniruddha Hazra, MD:
In Chicago, we had a resurgence of mpox cases in the spring of 2023, and the majority of those cases were in fully vaccinated individuals who had received either 2 doses of MVA-BN or 1 dose of smallpox vaccine.

Mpox After Previous Infection and/or Vaccination: Global Case Series

Aniruddha Hazra, MD:
In addition, we reported a global case series looking not only at the United States but also at other parts of the world to identify people who acquired mpox after either previous infection or vaccination.

We found that although infection following vaccination may occur, vaccination seems to decrease time to recovery, reduce the clinical severity of symptoms, and reduce the need for hospitalization.

Continued Need for Mpox Prevention Efforts

Aniruddha Hazra, MD:
I think the messaging for mpox should be similar to that for COVID-19: although vaccination will not completely eliminate transmission or acquisition of disease, it certainly is our most powerful tool to protect ourselves from severe disease and hospitalization.
