Validated Screening Tools for OUD

There are validated screening tools for OUD.23 Many of these are designed for both alcohol and drug use and can be used in multiple settings. Some are very short and can be used in primary care to determine whether to refer the patient for more intensive treatment.

When screening, we may determine that the issue is mild or moderate and can be managed without referral to more intensive treatment. These formalized screening tools may help us make that call.

TAPS

This is an example of one of the screening tools that is more commonly used.24,25 It is called TAPS: Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use tool. The example shown in this slide is for tobacco and alcohol use, but the same questions might be asked for prescription medications and other substances. The primary focus is frequency of use in the past 12 months and allows us to assess whether there has been problematic use in the past 90 days.
